Integrated microgrid design combining solar PV, battery energy storage, and diesel generation to provide a stable, low-carbon electricity supply for an island community in the Bahamas.
The Challenge
Island grid environments present unique stability and resilience challenges — there is no backup from a wider transmission network. The design needed to seamlessly integrate three generation and storage technologies while maintaining grid frequency and voltage within tight tolerances under all operating conditions.
Our Approach
Ecovoltec designed a fully integrated microgrid combining solar PV, BESS, and synchronised diesel generators, with control logic to optimise the dispatch sequence and maximise renewable penetration. The protection scheme was designed to operate autonomously during islanded conditions and reconnect to the grid safely following a fault.
The Outcome
The completed microgrid significantly increased renewable energy penetration for the island, reducing diesel consumption and operating costs while maintaining the supply reliability that an island-dependent community requires.
